ATM Story

The Jerk, the Prostitute, and ATM

Funny Short Story

The Jerk, the Prostitute, and the ATM

Being a banker, I see a lot of situations about money.  Some of it is sad, but sometimes they are quite hilarious.  They usually have a lesson to be learned and this one is no exception.

One of many roles that I have occupied is that of bank security.  Bank security is responsible for keeping the bank branches, bank staff, and bank assets all safe.  They oversee the bank security systems, make sure staff are following security procedures, and try to prevent fraud loss by investigation unauthorized transaction claims from customers.

Unauthorized transactions can be anything on the customers account that they don’t recognize and don’t want to pay.  Banking regulations give customers the right to fight transactions on their account through a dispute process in which the bank must investigate the charge and either credit the amount back to the customer or deny the claim.  It’s called Reg. E if you want to look it up.

For smaller claim amounts, the bank will usually just credit back the customer and take a loss.  This is because the cost to investigate the charge is more than the amount the customer wants back.  For larger claim amounts, they will usually refer the claim over to the security department for investigation.

I received a call from a branch manager that someone was disputing $500 in ATM withdrawals that all occurred within a few minutes of each other the night before. He was demanding his money back right away. She forwarded me the customer’s claim form and I began my investigation.  Some facts below:

  • The card was used at an ATM so the guy’s PIN code must have been used.

  • The guy admitted he’d be drinking at the bar across the street from the branch and “didn’t remember” taking the money.  He was claiming someone took advantage of him while he was drunk by getting him to take the money or getting him to give his PIN number.

  • The ATM belonged to the bank, so it was easy for me to pull the video.

I easily brought up the video and began laughing so hard my eyes teared.   I called the guy to explain the situation and he was being very rude and demanded $500 be placed into his account. He wouldn’t even give me a chance to explain.  Finallying I told him to meet me at the branch to get his money back.

A couple of days later we met at the branch location. He brought his wife with him,  who was equally rude.   They both wanted the money right away and didn’t care if the bank took a loss.  The guy was being a total jerk again.  He was demanding that he knew his rights, banks take people’s money, and he wanted his money back right now or he’d sue us.

I sat down with them both and played the video on my ipad.  There’s the guy barely standing up straight at the ATM.  He was clearly the one that put in his PIN number and he was the one that took the money.  Standing right next to him was a much younger female that clearly looked like a prostitute.  On the video, he gave the female the money and they were kissing! The guy just said he didn’t remember any of this to his wife. I thought the wife was going to slug him or get really mad, but she just said “Ew gross, you kissed that skank!”.

At that point I explained the claim was being denied and anything that happened after this point was between the two of them. They both left the bank together.

So what’s the money lesson to be learned here?

  1. If you’re going to go out drinking to the point of not remembering what’s going to happen, then leave your ATM card at home!

  2. Think twice about putting in a claim for an ATM withdrawal because they have cameras!

  3. Don’t be a jerk, because it will come back and bite you!
